Seeing some of the great #2018bestnine posts on Instagram really got me reflecting on our second season and what we’ve achieved this year.
We can be very quick to linger on the negatives that we don’t celebrate the positives, so I’d like to share with you some positive moments for MarGins during 2018:
In January we met the fabulously inspiring team from The Outdoor Guide at the Destinations Show in London and Julia Bradbury. Julia’s love for the big outdoors stems from walking the countryside with her father when she was young. This really resonated with me as my zest for adventure and exploring the big outdoors, also comes from my wonderful late fathers attitude to enjoying the simple things in life
We were finalists in the North Norfolk District Council Business Awards 2018. It was a wonderful event to attend and we felt very proud to have been considered for an award along with such prestigious North Norfolk businesses at such an early stage in our business
I have to hold my hands up and admit that when I started my business I had no idea how ‘to do’ Social Media and didn’t even know what a # meant! So when I won the Small Business Sunday (SBS) Twitter competition set up by Theo Pathitis it was a bit of a shock to say the least. In February we attended the fabulous networking event Theo organises for all SBS winners in Birmingham, to receive our certificate from the man himself. What an inspiration! So interesting to hear about his background and how he started as a ‘shopkeeper’
This year we’ve been very fortunate to be included in 2 of my absolute favourite magazines. Jess, a journalist for Coast Magazine and her wonderful family came to Norfolk to stay in one of our new family glamping tents at Deepdale Backpackers and Camping and wrote the most wonderful 5 page feature for their August edition. Plus The Simple Things reviewed one of our dog friendly walking holidays on the North Norfolk Coast which we were absolutely delighted with
2018 saw the introduction of our Glamping only Holidays. Guests choose where they would like one of our fully equipped safari tents set up, so when they arrive it’s all ready to welcome them and their holiday can start right away. We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response: “All our camping gear is now going on E-bay! What a fantastic stay, everything was thought of and the bed was comfier than home. There is absolutely nothing I can think of to improve the experience except make a repeat reservation for the same weekend next year! Thanks so much”
We teamed up with 2 amazing local practitioners during 2018 to offer Experience Holidays for guests. In May we held a yoga retreat at The Old Vicarage campsite in Moulton St Mary with Lucy who provided a wonderful agenda of yoga, mindfulness and massage treatments. We not only provided our tents but all the catering for the weekend. In September we worked with Simon Hunter Marsh and his partner Kate for a weekend of foraging on the Stiffkey saltmarshes and then Simon treated us all to an absolute feast of local produce enhanced by the foraged finds: “Outstanding food, service and resources. Everything has been thought of – thank you for making the stay fabulous!”. If you are interested in one of our Experience Holidays click HERE to find out more
Our business just wouldn’t succeed without excellent business partnerships. One of our absolute highlights this year has been our collaboration with Deepdale Backpackers and Camping based at Burnham Deepdale on the North Norfolk Coast. In July we joined Deepdale Camping and Delegate Market along with Retro Campers, The Norfolk Coast Partnership and Norfolk Trails to showcase a Mini Deepdale at The Royal Norfolk Show. This was such a success we only went and won Best Tourism Stand at the show!! How cool was that??
I have to include the heatwave! Oh my goodness, what a season, our guests were (mostly) treated to constant blue skies and temperatures in the high 20’s and early 30’s. This was great for bookings but I did have to upgrade my mallet to a steel one to be able to knock the flipping tent pegs into ground like concrete. I also have wonderful memories of disappearing off into the saltmarshes after a long hot sticky day of taking down and setting up tents for a dip in the creeks to cool off…….bliss!
And finally, Deepdale’s 2nd Music Festival. This year we provided a glamping option and were very lucky to stay for the whole festival. A wonderful celebration of local musicians and artists which always has such a great atmosphere throughout the whole weekend. We totally recommend a visit but if you want to stay we suggest you book early as this is a very popular festival
As with every business, you need to stop and reflect on lessons learnt but sometimes you do need to focus on your positives and celebrate them, Cheers!
